Thanks for My Hair, Mom – How We Inherit Beautiful Hair
On Mother’s Day, we say thank you – for love, patience, care… and sometimes even for good genes! Because anyone who stands in front of the mirror in the morning, admiring their shiny curls or full volume, should know: much of it is not only due to good hair care, but also to our parents.
But how likely is it, really, to inherit beautiful hair?
Beautiful Hair: A Gift from Nature – and the Family
Whether hair is thick or thin, straight or curly, quick to get greasy or wonderfully low-maintenance – much of it is written in our DNA. But inheritance is more complicated than you might think. There isn’t just “one hair gene” that determines what our hair will be like. Instead, many small components in our genetic makeup work together. And that makes it pretty fascinating – and sometimes unpredictable.
What Gets Inherited – and How?
Here are a few examples of what we might inherit from our parents – especially our mother – for better or worse:
- Hair texture:
Whether we have straight or curly hair depends on the shape of our hair follicles. This shape is inherited – from both parents. So if Mom has curls and Dad has straight hair, the child could end up with anything: straight, wavy, frizzy, or a mix of all three. - Hair volume and density:
The number of hair strands we have – whether our mane appears thick or fine – is also passed down. Some people naturally have more hair follicles, others fewer. That’s something our bodies inherit, and we don’t have much say in the matter. - Tendency toward hair loss:
This one is especially interesting: in men, the risk of hereditary hair loss can actually come from the mother’s side – because certain genetic information responsible for this is found on the X chromosome, which a man inherits solely from his mother. - Color and shine:
Pigmentation – how light or dark our hair is – is also genetically determined. Whether hair has a natural shine is often linked to its structure, which we inherit as well.
How Likely Are You to Inherit Beautiful Hair?
There’s no exact formula that says, “You’ll get 70% curls and 30% volume.” But generally speaking: if both parents have similar hair traits, there’s a high chance the child will inherit those as well. If their hair types are very different, the result is often a colorful mix – literally.
Here’s a rough guideline:
- Two parents with thick, strong hair → good chances that the child will also have full hair.
- One parent with fine hair → about a 50:50 chance of how it turns out.
- A curly-haired mom and a straight-haired dad → waves are likely, but anything is possible.
When Nature Needs a Little Help – Hairdreams Makes It Happen

Our hair is a reflection of where we come from. But “beautiful hair” is also a matter of care, confidence, and sometimes mindset. And how many times did our mother show us how to wash, brush, braid, or style it the right way?
So today, with all our love, we say: Thank you, Mom – for your heart, your wisdom, and maybe even for my gorgeous hair!
